Chants/ Spells/ Prayers for bringing rain and relief from drought

Our forefathers had devised numerous prayers to propitiate the deities and pray for rains. These mantras can be chanted in times of drought and in extreme heat wave conditions.

It is purely a matter of faith and belief that drives these prayers. Some of them are listed below:

1) Chanting of Virata Parva from the Mahabharata 

One of the the Jagadgurus of Sringeri, Sri Sri Chandrasekara Bharati Maha Swamigal has mentioned that the Virata Parva of the Mahabharata has been encoded with Varuna Beejas and Varuna Mantras. Chanting of these chapters of the Mahabharata would serve as a prayer for abundant rainfall.

The book "Guru Krupa Vilasam" mentions an interesting incident in 1925 at Devakottai (near Madurai) by Gurupada Shekaran on the Vana Parva chanting and its effect. 

Sri Gurupada Shekaran is present during an discussion between Swamiji and the mutt manager.The manager says "It is better if we move our camp to Madurai. Its more than 5-6 years since it rained here. All the wells are empty. We are bringing water travelling a long distance with the help of elephants. There are a lot of people who have food in our camp. It is difficult to manage without water".

Swamiji says "If I was informed earlier we might have avoided coming here. But having come it is not fair to leave this place disappointing the people. Ask the priest to come with Mahabharata book along with puja items". After the priest came, Swamiji asks him to chant Virata Parva and the priests starts off in a traditional way. Swamiji also starts chanting mantras. Gurupada Sekaran witnesses all what was happening. It was around 1 PM in the noon and the sun was at its peak. At 2 PM, clouds from nowhere hid the sun. Cool breeze starts and its starts raining heavily. So heavy was the rain, except the sound of rain nothing could be heard. It continues to pour and at around 4:30 PM, the manager comes to Swamiji with a sign of relief. Swamiji asks "Is the rain sufficient?" and then asks the priest to light the camphor as a sign of completion. At 5 PM, the priest lights the camphor and almost spontaneously the rain stops,

The next day, he humbly enquires about what happened yesterday. Swamiji says "We did Varuna Japa. The rains came. Sage Vyasa has embedded the varuna mantra into the Virata Parva. The effect the of the mantra creates a subtle effect in the environment"

2) Varuna Mantra Japa - This a very detailed procedure and there are lots of regulations to be followed like eating food without salt till the Japa is completed etc. It is usually performed by qualified priests sitting inside water filled tanks for hours. The malayalam movie "Paithrukam" is based on this concept of Varuna Japa in a drought ridden place.

May waters gathered near the Sun, and those wherewith the Sun is joined, speed forth this sacrifice of ours. I call the Waters, Goddesses, wherein our cattle quench their thirst; oblations to the Streams to be given.

I ask this of thee with my prayer adoring; thy worshipper craves this with his oblation. Varuna, stay thou here and be not angry; steal not our life from us, O thou world-ruler.

3) Chanting of Varuna Sukhta & Parjanya Sukhta - Varuna Sukhta is a powerful mantra from the vedas for invoking the rain deity. Parjanya means rain bearing clouds. Chanting of these 2 mantras should be performed by people well versed in Vedas.

4) Chanting of Azhi Malai Kanna Pasuram from Tiruppavai - This Tamil poem should be chanted in groups in dry lakes, river beds etc. in multiple groups. The poem is given below

Meaning: Oh Lord of the rains, who is as majestic as that of the beautiful sea, don't hesitate to dive into the ocean, collect as much water, rise to the sky and assume the colour of the Lord (black). As with the Lord, who has graceful and powerful shoulders, oh rain god, without any delay, shine like the discus that he holds in His right hand and resound to produce the same impact that occurs when the conch  on his left hand is blown, instantly produce the rain as how the Lord will shoot his arrows, to allow us take bath during the vow and happily flourish and thrive in this world.

5) Purusha Mirugam Puja at Thiruvadavur - Purasha mirugam is known as Spinyx in  Egypt. It is commonly used as a vahanam in south Indian temples. It has the head of a Lion and body of a main. Tiruvadavur temple is located near Madurai. Outside the temple there is this statue of the Purusha Mirugam. The locals perform puja to this for abundance in rains.  This was followed in several temples in south India but now this practice is lost.

6) Chanting of Annapurna Ashtakam and Avahanthi Homam 

7) A vedic ritual called Kariri Ishti is described for abundance of rains. 

8) "Amruta Varshini" raaga - The name itself means flow of nectar. Songs can be sung in this raaga for rains.

9) Chanting of the Rishya Srunga Sloka - This was suggested by Kanchi Maha Periyava when Tamilnadu was facing drought with no rains.

Mantras and Chants To Stop Rains and Natural Calamities

Natural calamities can be controlled only by the ALMIGHTY. Here are some 

chants/incantations/prayers  from our scriptures

1) History has proved that,when a natural calamity (incessant thunder and rain by Indra) wanted to blow the 
Brijwasis(people of Gokulam), Lord krishna pleased by their prayer and saved them. The following sloka 
relates to that incident. This sloka is from the Narayaneeyam (Govardhana Uddarana)

कृष्ण कृष्ण महाभाग त्व्न्नाथं  गोकुलम प्रभो |
त्रातु मर्हसी देवाण कुपिताद भक्वत्सल ||

This can be prayed whenever there is a problem to living beings from natural calamities like

floods,tsunami,earthquakes, etc.

2) Below is a Tamil poem sung by Shaivaite saint Sri Sundaramoorthy Nayanmar  in Tirupungur temple to stop rains.

3) Rishya Shringeshwara temple (Rishya Shringa) at Kigga which is 9 kms from Sringeri in  
Karnataka. As per legends, the great sage Rishya Shringa is said to have performed penance and 
attained Samadhi here. As per the puranas, wherever the sage used to go, that place used to 
experience good rains and there would be no draught.It must be mentioned that the agumbe forest where 
Kigga is located is one of the wettest places in the south.

The Prayer in this temple can be done even to stop the heavy rains as well.

Raja Mathangi and Maha Lakshmi Puja for wealth and prosperity

This is a very powerful Maha Lakshmi Puja taken from the ancient palm leaf scrolls in the Thanjavur Saraswathi Mahal Library. It was called Samrajya Lakshmi Puja and was performed by Kings and Queens.

The puja was simplified and presented in a simple manner enabling even ordinary people to perform it. It is very auspicious to do it on Fridays and get blessed by Mahalakshmi - The Goddess of wealth and money.

Healing Mantra,Chant for Diabetes from Soundarya Lahari

This is the 34th verse of the 100 verses of Soundarya Lahiri. This mantra is said to be a chant for curing Diabetes. This has been referenced by Kanchi Paramacharya in Deivathin Kural (Vol 6, Page 932). 

शरीरं त्वं शम्भोः शशिमिहिरवक्षोरुहयुगं

तवात्मानं  मन्ये भगवति नवात्मानमनघम्।

अतश्शेषश्शेषीत्ययमुभयसाधारणतया

स्थितस्संबन्धो वां समरसपरानन्दपरयोः॥

śarīraṁ tvaṁ śambhoḥ śaśimihiravakṣoruhayugaṁ

tavātmānaṁ  manye bhagavati navātmānamanagham |

ataśśeṣaśśeṣītyayamubhayasādhāraṇatayā

“O! Goddess! Your appear as the body of Siva, with your twin bosoms of sun and moon.   You are the pure Shiva with nine primary characteristics. They are common to both of  you and both of You are in a state of transcendental blissful interdependency.”.

The nine refers here to the nine triangles of the Sri Chakra or the nine metaphysical attributes of Shiva (Kaala-Time,Kula,Nama,Jnana,Siddha,Nadha,Bindu,Kala,Jeeva). A very detailed explanation of the mystical meaning of this mantra is available in Deivathin Kural for 20-30 pages. 

Paramacharya also mentions that even though some mantras like this do not have a direct reference as a prayer to cure diseases, the power of the sound and vibrations of this mantra are capable of accruing the benefits.

Mantras for common problems - Infallible Vedic Remedies

" Infallible Vedic Remedies" is a book composed by one of the great seers Swami Shantananda Puri.The saint has written about his experiences in his books "Musings of a Himalayan Monk" and "Fragrant Flowers" which are also available for download. 

Swamiji asks us to get it initiated from a qualified Guru before chanting or treat Sri Ramakrishna or Sri Ramana Maharishi as one's Guru and start chanting with all sincerity and faith. He also provides a good introduction and numerous examples from his life on how these mantras worked. Of all the mantras above, one incident needs to be mentioned. There are 3 versions of the Siva Sahasranama Mantra and 2 of them are very popular. The third was brought to public by the efforts of Sri Shantananda Puri Maharaj. 

Swamiji was entrusted with the effort of identifying and publishing the third unknown version of Siva Sahasranama by the great Guru the Paramcharya of Kanchi - Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswathi Swamigal. Vaalai Kummi

In TamilNadu, Bala was known by the name of Vaalai. Most of the Sidhars have worshipped Sri Bala Tripura Sundari. Konanka Sidhar has written a poem "Vaalai Kummi" on this deity.

There are three Dhyanas for this form of Vana Durga Devi, let us explore the Satvika Dhyana.

SauvarNaambuja madhyagaam - The one who is stationed in the middle of the golden lotus; Generally the deity is meditated on in the centre of Samvitkamala or heart lotus. As per Yogataravali and other works,
a purified heart, illuminated by the Samskara called 'Diksha' is the golden lotus.

trinayanAM - The one with three eyes;

SaudAminIsannibhAM - the one who resembles the lightening; It may be taken to mean directly that Amba is as bright as the lightening. However, this refers to her Sukshmatara Swarupa i.e. the most subtle form which is Kundalini. This is all the more appropriate in this verse which is a Dhyana Shloka of Sri Vanadurga because this mantra is one of the very few Vidyas which address the Kundalini directly some others being Srividya, Tripura Bhairavi etc. Even the Sruti has said, 'nIvAra shUkavattanvI'.

shaMkhaM chakra varAbhayAni dadhatiM - The one who holds in her hands the conch or Shamkha, discus or Chakra, Vara i.e. the gesture of granting boons and Abhaya - the gesture of granting protection from all fears. So, Amba is depicted as having four hands; she holds the Shankha and Chakra in the two upper hands and the Vara and Abhaya mudras in her lower two hands.

indoH kalAM bibhratiM - one who wears a crescent moon (on her crown) - This is for the sake of decoration. Since amba is Vishwarupini, the very universe is her form. The nakshatras form the jewels of her crown, and the crescent moon forms the decoration adorning her crown. Also, as explained by Lakshmidhara and other commentaries on Saundaryalahari, the attributes Trinayana and Chandrakala  - represent her SArUpyatva or rUpasAmya - the quality of oneness of sameness of form with Shiva. This is one of the six major Samyas. So, Devi is here actually Shiva-shakti in one.

graiveyA~NgadahArakuNDaladharAM - The one who is adorned with necklace (the pattern of which resembles the chain around the elephant's neck),Hara or chain, bracelets and anklets, earrings etc.

aakhaNDalaadhyaiH stutAM - The one who is worshiped by Brahma and other deities.

dhyAyedvindhyanivAsinIM - Meditate on the devi who resides on the Vindhya mountains; It is well known that Vindyachal is one of the most important abodes of Amba. She herself confirms this in Devi Bhagavata and Saptashati also.

shashimukhiim - the one whose face is bright and beautiful like the moon; The moon here represents the complete disc having the sixteen Kalas. Thus, Amba is complete with Shodasha Kalas.

paarshwasthapa~nchAnanAm - Having the five-faced lord Sadashiva by her side. Among the five Durgas, Mula Durga, Jwala Durga, Shulini Durga, Ati Durga and Vana Durga are respectively having the pancha

Brahmas as their consorts (As per Vanadurga Kalpa). So, Vanadurga's consort is depicted as Sadashiva. As per other Tantras, it is Aranyaka Ishwara or Kirateshwara, the lord in the form of a hunter. When Bhagavan assumed the form of a hunter to test Arjuna, Amba accompanied him as Vana Durga. Devi has three forms with different number of hands and weapons based on Rajas, Satva and Tamas. The

Dhyana Bhedas may be learnt from Sharada Tilaka or Vanadurga Kalpa.

The mind is a jungle which is filled with wild animals called lust, anger, greed, jealousy, attachment, ego, all due to Avidya. The great hunter Sadashiva, with his power or Shakti called Vana Durga, who is none but Brahma Vidya, destroys the animals of Avidya. This is the significance of her form. The significance of her mantra, which is the direct invocation of Kundalini, has to be learnt by a Sampradayavit Guru only.

This is one of the Dhyana slokas of the powerful Navakshari or Navarna Mantra on Goddess Durga. The mantra has to be initiated by a Guru. This mantra forms the basis for the Devi Mahatmyam or Durga Saptashati.

Laghu Saptasathi or Hanuman's Stotra on Goddess Durga

This is a set of 18 verses by Hanuman on Goddess Durga when Lord Hanuman was about to attack Mahiravana or Ahiravan.

The story goes like this - During the battle between Rama and Ravana, When Indrajit (Ravana's son) is killed, her calls his brother Mahiravana for help, who was the kind of Patala.

Ahiravana takes away Rama and Lakshmana taking the form of Vibhishana. When Hanuman realizes what has happened,he enters Patala and defeats Mahiravana in a battle. Before that he prays to Goddess Chandi or Durga for victory with this Mantra.

Lots of people say that it is difficult to find true saints these days and world is filled with only fake ones. This is far from true. There have been people who lived amidst us, till very recently who were the perfect epitome of sainthood. But they gave no publicity for themselves. Media doesn't talk about them.

One such person, was Sri Govinda Damodara Swamigal who was known as Angarai Periva or Triplicane Periyava. His life history can be seen in detail, in the Tamil document below:

He was fortunate to deliver lectures on Sri Ramayanam and Sri Bhagavatam in front of the Kanchi Maha Perivaya for several years. Inspite of his severe financial difficulties, he never charged for his lectures.He shed his mortal coil in 2004 and his Jeeva Samadhi (Adhistanam) is there in Pazhoor near Trichy on way to Karur.
