Mayilarangam Mayuranthar Shiva Temple, Lalgudi

Located in Periyaverseeli village in Lalgudi district, Mayilarangam Mayuranatha swamy Siva Temple and Mangalambika Temple had a hoary tradition but has been lost in the ravages of time.

This temple has been visited twice by the great Kanchi Shakaracharya and he mentioned the people that the upkeep of this temple would bless them with good progeny. Childless couples will be blessed with a child. The shrine of the mother is built in such a way that her full form slowly comes into focus like the kesadhi Pada varna mentioned in the scriptures.

The temple is now in a bad shape and needs the support of devotees. Yearly, A Chandi Homam is performed in a nearby temple and only during this temple sees some crowds.

Brahma Temples of South India

It is a common myth that Lord Brahma doesn't have a shrine anywhere and Pushkar is the only exception. But as per Agama Shastras, which define the architecture of any temple, every Shiva temple must have a shrine for Brahma. This can be noticed in most Shiva temples in south India especially TamilNadu.

Two such Brahma temples stand out in the south

1) Bramha Temple at Tirupattur near Trichy

When we travel from Chennai to Trichy it is before Samayapuram. Here Lord Brahma is supposed to change one's destiny. It also has Jeeva Samadhi's of Sages Patanjali and Vyakrapatha.

More details and photos can be found in the blog:
http://aalayamkanden.blogspot.in/2010/10/brahmapureeswarar-temple-tirupattur.html

2) Bramhashirakandeeswarar and Harashapa vimochana Perumal temples

These two temples are located almost opposite to each other in Tirukandiyur which on the Thanjavur - Kumbakonam route near Tiruvaiyaru. This place is in fact a Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva kshetra.niquely Lord Brahma is seen with his consort Saraswathi here and the local children come frequently for worship. Lord Shiva is known as Brahmasirakandeeswarar.

Lord Vishnu is known as Harashapa Vimochana perumal which is one of the 108 sacred temples for Vaishnavaites. The Lord here even removes the Brahmahatya dosham (sin of killing a saint, guru or a learned one) when committed unknowingly.Devotees should visit these two temples and get blessed by Brahma,Vishnu and Shiva.

Cuddalore town in Tamilnadu is known for the Hayagriva temple and Tirupathiripuliyur Shiva temple. A few kms from the cuddalore town(5 kms) is the Tirumanikuzhi Shiva Temple. The most unique feature of this Shiva temple is that the shrine of Lord Shiva(Vamanapureeswarar) is opened only during Aarthi for a few minutes. After that the screen(curtain) is put, the priest opens only when some other devotee comes for Aarthi. The legend is that Lord Shiva and Parvathi are together in this temple shrine. Here the lord is in Shiva Shakti Aiykya Swaroopa (Union of Lord Shiva and Shakti). There is no separate Palli-Arai. The 11 rudras are said to Guard the shrine. The divine mother is known as Ambujakshi ( on the lines of Kamakshi,Meenakshi etc.). The peetam here is known as Ambujakshi peetam. She occupies the prominence in this temple.

Couples who are seperated due to family problems worship Lord Shiva in this temple and offer their prayers.

Sapta Kanya shrine at Tirumala,Tirupathi--Akkagarla Gudi

As we drive down from the holy Tirumala mountains, enroute there is a small shrine of Sri Sapta Kanya ( Bramhi, Maheswari, Kaumari, Vaishnavi, Varahi , Narasimhi, Chamunda). The entrance to the shrine itself is very narrow and there are 7 stones kept there. According to Saints, this shrine was a huge temple in the past. Devotees had performed elaborate pujas there but today the cycle of time has brought this temple to such a sorry state.

Sri Sapta Kanya Deevathala pooja
But still, the power of the mother Goddess still remains there. Devotees to Tirupathi are requested to visit this shrine ( as they descend from the hills) and get blessed. Locally, this shrine is referred as Akkagaru (7 sisters) or Akkagarla Gudi. Every year in this temple very big pooja will be celebrated on the day of Varalakshmi pooja.

Lord Narasimha with Mystic third eye at Singa Perumal Temple, Chennai

Lord Narasimha with Mystic third eye at Singa Perumal Temple

Singaperumal is an ancient but well know town near Chennai. The town is named after an ancient Narsimha temple that is believed to be around 1500 years old. This temple is located on top of a hillock. The temple is also known as Patalathri which means reddish hill. The earlier name for this place was Paatalaadri puram.

Main Deities: The main deity of this temple is Lord Narsimha. Narsimha is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu that is half man half lion. Lord Vishnu reincarnated himself as Narsimha to kill demon Hiranyakashyap and save his devotee Prahlaad. The Goddess Mahalakshmi here is called as Ahobilavalli.

Temple Specialties:
Narsimha is seen here as Ugra (fierce) swaroop, his 4 hands holding conch, sudarshan chakra (wheel) and shows the Abhay (fearless) hastha (hand) with one hand and the last hand rests on his thigh. The idol has three eyes and the third eye is shown by the priest only after Aarthi. This third eye is usually covered with the thirunamam (a mark made by clay paste on the forehead). The temple priest will show us third eye during arathi by lifting the thirunamam.

A Very very Rare Alinjal tree or Ankola (Scientific name: Alangium Salvifolium) is found inside this temple. Only 10-15 trees of this kind can be seen in entire TamilNadu. The mentions of this tree can be found in ‘Naachiyaar Thirumozhi’ composed by Sri Aandaal.

Temple Architecture:
This temple is built during the reign of the Pallava kings.During the time of Narsimha Avtaar, this place was a dense forest. It is believed that the lord came into the dreams of a saint called Jaaplar as Ugra Narsimha (ferocious narsimha). Here the lord is 8 feet tall. This is a rock cut temple where the entire temple and deity have been carved out of a small hill.To go around the temple, one has to go around the entire hillock. This is also known as Giri Pradhakshinam. The entrance to the temple has 4 main pillars with different sculptures on it. The Dhwajasthambha or the pillar where lamps are lit has a sculpture of Sri Anjaneya (hanuman) on it.

Festivals and Prayers:

Giri Pradakshina on full moon day is very famous.

In the month of June (Tamil month of Chittrai) the biggest festival called Brahmotsavam takes place in this temple.

It is said that seeing the third eye of Lord Narsimha can remedy fears, psychological problems or enemy problems.

People praying for marriage or children tie a small piece of thread from their clothes on the branches of the Alinjal tree.

Temples in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh

Nellore (Nelluru) is a city in Nellore district (officially: Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore district), located on the banks of Penna River, is one of the 13 districts of Andhra Pradesh.

The district was known as Vikrama Simhapuri until 13th Century and later it came to be referred to as Nellore. According to Sthala Purana depicts, a lingam was seen in the form of a stone under nelli tree. The place gradually became Nelli-ooru (Nelli-Name of the Tree and ooru-place) and then to present day Nellore.

Another belief is that, the city derives its name from the Tamil, "nelli" which means rice, as paddy cultivation is the predominant occupation in this region.

It was named by Government of Andhra Pradesh as Sri Potti Sri Ramulu Nellore District after the immense contribution of the revolutionary freedom fighter who died fasting for the formation of seperate state for telugu people as Andhra Pradesh.

Historically the district was under the rule of mouryas, sathavahanas, pallavas, cholas, telugcholas, kakatias, pandyans etc. The great Telugu poet Tikkana Somayaji translated 15 parvas of Sanskrit Mahabharata into Telugu was from Nellore.
